Bruges, Belgium is a historic town that may remind some travelers of Venice. Initially built as protection from invaders, canals run throughout the city.
Much of Bruges's architecture is preserved from the Medieval Ages, giving the town an abundance old-world charm. A celebration of sorts, called "The Procession of the Holy Blood," is held annually, with locals attending in "ancient cult and knight garments."
Home to a number of beautiful landmarks, visitors have a number of significant sites to choose from, including the Belfry, a medieval bell tower located in the market square, St. Salvator Cathedral, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and even Choco-Story, a museum dedicated to chocolate.
Beer connoisseurs can also stop by De Halve Maan, a centuries-old brewery that was first opened in 1564 and still operates today. The brewery produces Brugse Zot, a beer only made in Bruges, and offers museum tours that showcase its history, as well as old brewing methods.
